چکیده

T he immune system is a fi nely tuned network that protects the host against foreign antigens, particularly infectious agents. Sometimes this network breaks down, causing the immune system to react inappropriately. Inappropriate immune responses may be (1) exaggerated against environmental antigens (allergy); (2) misdirected against the host’s own cells (autoimmunity); (3) directed against benefi cial foreign tissues, such as transfusions or transplants (alloimmunity); or (4) insuffi cient to protect the host (immune defi ciency). All of these can be serious or life threatening. Exaggerated immune responses (allergy) are the most common, but usually the least life threatening.

Changes in Glycosylation of Alpha-1-Protease Inhibitor in Inflammation (Rheumatoid Arthritis and Crohn\'s Disease)

Alpha-1-proteinase inhibitor (API) is one of the acute phase proteins. Following an inflammatory stimuli the concentration of API increased up to four folds. Accompanying these quantitative changes, there is qualitative alterations in the structure of carbohydrate moiety (glycosylation). To determine the alterations in the glycosylation of API in inflammation, API was isolated from the sera of...

Alterations in the vascular β-adrenoceptors of the rabbit knee joint due to acute inflammation

It has been shown that acute inflammation reduces the effectiveness of sympathetic nerves in the regulation of knee joint blood flow. To investigate the role of vascular β- adrenoceptors in this event, 12 NZW rabbits were maintained anaesthetized by 1 % halothane in N2O/O2, and acute knee joint inflammation was induced by intra-articular injection of 1 ml of 2% carageenan solution 24 hours be...

Inflammation and cancer: an ancient link with novel potentials.

Infection and chronic inflammation contribute to about 1 in 4 of all cancer cases. Mediators of the inflammatory response, e.g., cytokines, free radicals, prostaglandins and growth factors, can induce genetic and epigenetic changes including point mutations in tumor suppressor genes, DNA methylation and post-translational modifications, causing alterations in critical pathways responsible for m...

Varicocele-Induced Infertility in Animal Models

Varicocele is characterized by abnormal tortuosity and dilation of the veins of the pampiniform plexus within the spermatic cord. Although several reports show the mechanisms by which the varicocele exerts its infertility impact, the exact pathophysiology for varicocele-induced inflammation and its relationship with testicular endocrine disruption remain largely unknown. This review article wil...

Human activated macrophages and hypoxia: a comprehensive review of the literature

Macrophages accumulate in poorly vascularised and hypoxic sites including solid tumours, wounds and sites of infection and inflammation where they can be exposed to low levels of oxygen for long periods. Up to date, different studies have shown that a number of transcription factors are activated by hypoxia which in turn activate a broad array of mitogenic, pro-invasive, pro-angiogenic, and pro...

Inflammatory Alterations of the Extracellular Matrix in the Tumor Microenvironment

Complex interactions between cancer cells and host stromal cells result in the formation of the "tumor microenvironment", where inflammatory alterations involve the infiltration of tumor-associated fibroblasts and inflammatory leukocytes that contribute to the acquisition of malignant characteristics, such as increased cancer cell proliferation, invasiveness, metastasis, angiogenesis, and avoid...
